EFFECTS OF OPERATING VARIABLES, KINETICS AND THERMODYNAMICS STUDIES


ABSTRACT

This research project work studied the kinetic description and the thermodynamic aspect of the extraction of oil from mango seeds using n-hexane as the extraction solvent. The individual effects of key operating variables such as temperature, extraction time, particle size and amount of solvent on the oil yield were also investigated. For this study, actual experimental data obtained from the oil extraction process by varying the key operating variables were carefully analysed to ascertain the relative oil yields. The mass transfer kinetics power model was applied to the experimental data to mathematically describe the kinetics of the process. The laws of thermodynamics were also used to evaluate the thermodynamic requirements of the process. From the results obtained, it was established that oil yield increased with increase in temperature, extraction time and amount of solvent but decreased with increase in particle size. 


Maximum oil yield of 12.15% was obtained from a total of about 14.64%, at 80°C for an extraction time of 210 minutes using 15g of dried seeds of size 0.353mm and 50 ml of n-hexane. The experimental data showed that the extraction followed a first-order kinetics with a rate constant largely influenced by temperature. The activation energy Ea was found to be 45.6406 kJ/mol while the standard activation thermodynamic parameters - H°, ∆S° andG° - were calculated at each prevailing temperature value. The thermodynamic study also yielded positive values for the enthalpy change (H) and entropy change (S) as 32.7815 kJ/mol and 0.1088 kJ/mol.K respectively, and negative values of Gibbs’ free energy change G at each prevailing temperature value. The positive value of enthalpy showed that the extraction process is endothermic and therefore required energy input. The positive value of entropy showed the randomness and the irreversible nature of the extraction process. The negative values of Gibbs’ free energy confirmed that the process is spontaneous and feasible.
